Managing the Environment

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry is preparing for a major change with an upcoming environmental management bill. This law will establish the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) to oversee and coordinate environmental efforts in South Sudan.

NEMA will implement the new Act, creating a legal framework for sustainable and accountable environmental policies.

Bizzdev is committed to supporting businesses navigate the EIA process, ensuring compliance and promoting responsible environmental practices.

Current Status of EIA Legislation

The Draft National Environmental Bill 2013 is nearing approval, establishing NEMA as an independent regulator. Until then, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry will oversee functions like EIAs.

We help clients to navigate the transition with expert support to meet EIA requirements and align with current and future national standards.

The Challenge

Ecosystems and resources are under threat

South Sudan’s ecosystems and resources are threatened by rapid urbanisation and resource exploitation. Its diverse ecological zones, including the important Sudd wetland, host rich biodiversity.

However, oil production, deforestation, and pollution threaten health and sustainable development. Bizzdev sees the urgent need for NEMA to manage these risks through thorough Environmental Impact Assessments, ensuring ecological safety and mitigation before projects start.
